RISING lamb prices and a tightening of supply have had an impact on retail sales of the red meat.
Butcher Zac Young, Bruce’s Meats Mount Barker, said there had been a shift away from the protein source in favour of other, cheaper, meats.
“Popularity is definitely going down as the price goes up,” he said.
Meat & Livestock Australia domestic marketing manager Graeme Yardy said there were spikes of lamb sales at key times of the year but “we are definitely fighting a declining trend in the domestic market”.
He said marketing was working to promote other attributes of lamb to counter the issue of the price point.
