STRATHALBYN
Yarding: 1100
Steers to $3.12/kg
Heifers to $2.52/kg
A LARGE contingent of Kangaroo Island cattle made up the yarding at the Strathalbyn feature cattle market, with steers by far the bulk on offer.
Prices were back on the recent market, with Elders Strathalbyn’s Danny Reynolds quoting steers prices as much as 40 cents a kilogram to 50c/kg back, while heifers sold about 10-15c/kg cheaper.
He said part of the decline was due to the loss of a major buyer, while recent hot weather and a glut of cattle at processors also had an impact.
Landmark Strathalbyn’s Bradley Walker said the sale had followed the trend of markets across SA this week with heaviest steers, in the 300kg-plus bracket, the most affected by the price decline.
He said the heifer quality was slightly down on those offered at the sale two weeks earlier.
