Steers strong at Mount Pleasant weaner sale

The pen of eight were pregnancy-tested in-calf to a Keywyn Red Angus bull and sold to William Hurn, Angaston, who also bought a second pen of 13 at $1600.

Alan 'Nugget' Willson dispersed 47 head, mainly Angus breeders, from his Angaston property, which he was no longer leasing. 

Also keen for the quality breeding genetics offered by the Willsons was Alan Manning, Woodside, who bought seven Angus at $1400, five Red Angus at $1340 and another two Red Angus at $960, all PTIC to Red Angus.

He plans to send the females to his South East property to build up numbers.

In the weaner section of the sale, G&P Noblet, Magill, sold four heavier Angus-Murray Grey steers to $1080, while AJK Pastoral, Myponga, also sold eight Poll Hereford steers at $1080. 

Regari, Tanunda, also sold 15 Angus steers at $1030, while E Iuliano, Birdwood, sold nine Angus-Murray Grey steers also at $1030.

But the top steer price of the sale went to an Angus from MI&CM Pym, Mount Torrens, at $1420, while a black baldy steer from Brown Farming Enterprises, Keyneton, made $1220.

AJK Pastoral sold about 40 weaners in total. The Poll Hereford heifers reached $750 for three, and $650 for another eight, while their four black baldy heifers also made $650.  

The Browns also sold Angus weaners, with 14 steers making $900, eight steers making $780, 14 heifers $740 and another 12 heifers making $690. 

Heifers topped at $900 for G&P Noblet for five Angus-Murray Greys.

Terlinga Farm, Tungkillo, sold eight Santa-Angus heifers at $890, and another seven at $780, while Wongarah Pastoral, Mount Pleasant, sold two Murray Grey-crosses also at $890. 

Landmark Fawcett Mount Pleasant principal Colin Fawcett said steers sold well from $2.50-$2.90/kg.

“Heifers were a little stickier with numbers about and many sales on at the moment, but the tops still made up to $900 a head,” he said.

Big orders came from McCarthys, Thomas Foods International, Princess Royal and Landmark Loxton.
