Millicent cropper Tom Bell says they have been fortunate to enjoy a “double whammy” with excellent yields and high prices.
“It is one of the best years I have seen since I’ve been home, so about 10 years,” he said.
“It has been an unfortunate year for those up north but their dry years are our good years with a lack of supply pushing prices up for us.”
Tom says the 670 millimetres of rain from May to the end of December has fallen at the right time, although the yields on some of their wheat was dented by frosts in October and November.
“It didn’t get too wet in July-August when the (soil) profile can be full,” he said.
They also saw some fusarium head blight after the late finishing rains.
Tom and his father Greg started harvest prior to Christmas and hope to finish their 2200-hectare cropping program in the coming week.
Their Clearfield hybrid canolas 45Y91 and 970 have yielded 3.2 to 4t/ha, broad beans 3 to 4.5t/ha and Sentinel and Trojan wheat has gone between 5.5 and 8t/ha.
