For many years they have been buying sires from northern NSW studs Donrinda and Double C, which are focusing on bulls with about five-eighths Herefords and three-eighths Brahman. In September they bought an outcross, the $17,000 top price bull at the Ascot Neimen on-property sale in Banana, Qld.

Paul Thomas, Gulnare, with his son David and grandson Liam, 3. While cropping is still the backbone of the enterprise, there is a growing emphasis on sheep.

Graeme and Michele Hamilton, Hamilton Run, OB Flat, pay close attention to the genetic performance of their herd of red cows.

Mark Hambly, Mount Pleasant, has continued to use Suffolk rams over Merino ewes because of the large lambs produced. 

Jayne and Anthony Gregurke, Parrakie, with some of their 4.5-year-old Dalveen-blood Merino ewes, which are mated to Lowan Hill Border Leicester rams.

Kym Graetz, Keyneton, said the district had been fortunate this year. Despite having below average rainfall, it had fallen at the right time to keep the feed supply up.

Richie Kirkland, Furner, puts out a custom blend of dry trace minerals on-farm and says it is giving him healthier, more productive sheep.

Nathan Wegener and his father Colin have switched to an eight-month shearing frequency to decrease staple length. 

Southern Mallee sheep producers Roger, Ross, Raylene and Len Galbraith in their shearing shed, which had a renovation this year thanks to some fortunate financial decisions made on-farm.
