WOMEN from the dairy industry took some time away from the farm to relax for first of the DairySA’s Ladies Lunch.
Held at the Oasis Gardens & Functions Centre, the event was a chance to unwind from farm stresses and network with others in the sector.
Guest speaker at the lunch was Emily Salkeld of Small World Bakery, Langhorne Creek, who along with husband Chris Duffy, has been working on a project to build the opportunities for old wheat varieties that they use in their own organic bakery.
They are in the middle of their third harvest and have been building up seed numbers and experimenting with different heritage grains options in the bakery.
Ms Salkeld said the project was an important way to move wheat away from being simply a commodity and rebuild some of the relationships along the chain from farmer, to miller, baker and then consumer.
She said it was also an opportunity to bring back some of the diversity that has been lacking in the cropping industry.
Another DairySA Ladies Lunch will be held next Tuesday at Yahl for those living in the South East.
