A landmark report into live animal exports has identified systemic regulatory failings in the federal Agriculture Department, while pressure mounts on the government to allow a vote on new laws to ban the live sheep trade.
Calls for an industry ban gained impetus this week, following the launch of a new independent probe into allegations that senior officers in the Agriculture Department suppressed warnings of poor animal welfare practices in the live sheep export trade from seven junior staffers.
Mr Littleproud and the sheep live export industry had committed to implementing all 31 recommendations from the Moss Review.
Following the report’s release, Labor agriculture spokesman Joel Fitzgibbon renewed his call for a vote in federal parliament to phase out the industry.
