Organ donation recipient and advocate Megan McLoughlin, Tanunda, has been honoured with the title of local hero at the 2019 South Australian of the Year awards held at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday last week.
Ms McLoughlin is the founder of Herd of Hope, a charity that supports rural families and communities affected by organ donation.
She launched her charity in March 2018, with a unique approach that involved a cattle herd on Bondi Beach – a rural theme that continued with a camp draft at Marrabel in September.
Dr Richard Harris, the anaesthetist involved in the Thai cave rescue earlier this year, took out the top honour of South Australian of the Year.
Reconciliation advocate Reginald Dodd, Marree, was named SA senior Australian of the year, while AFL umpire Eleni Glouftsis – the competition’s first ever female field umpire – was honoured as the young South Australian of the year.
The awards were presented by SA Governor Hieu Van Le, with all state recipients to be considered for the national honours to be announced on Australia Day 2019.
