ADELAIDE based Westminster School continued its stellar run at the Mount Gambier Show last week, winning its third grand champion steer sash in four years.
The Speckle Park steer, Mount Eccles Noddy, which weighed 608 kilograms was supplied to the school by Udo Mahne,Leongatha, Vic.
It has been at the school since Term 1.
The May 2017 drop was given the nod by judge Ron Cowley, Roseleigh Angus stud, Pinnaroo, from 22 steers from 10 schools across the state.
Westminster head of agriculture Sarah Truran says it is a great learning experience and more relaxed than the led steer competition held at the Royal Adelaide Show.
“We take a selection of Year 10 students who have all put in an amazing effort throughout the year,” she said. “There is always a very good overjudge for them to learn from and they run enough handler heats that all the students get to lead.”
Reserve champion was a 742 kilogram Murray Grey steer, Nutcracker, shown by Bordertown High School.
The steers were processed and judged on hook at Teys Australia’s Naracoorte abattoir.
