GROWING confidence in Telpara Suffolk and Hampshire Down’ breeding program was evident with the significant lift in clearance at the stud’s third annual sale at Hartley on Friday.
The Pearce family sold 37 of 42 Suffolk rams to $2000 twice and averaged $1080, while all 10 Hampshire Down rams sold to $1800 twice averaging $975.
In addition 21 2017-drop Suffolk ewes, from both Telpara and guest vendors Peter and Julie Button, Ramsay Park, Minlaton were put up for sale. Nineteen of these sold for a $455 average.
Both Lot 6 and Lot 7 were knocked down for the $2000 sale high.
Both rams carried the Oakwood prefix following Telpara’s purchase of an elite selection of ewe and ram lambs from the high performing stud earlier in the year.
Ramsay Park bought Lot 6 which had Australian Sheep Breeding Values including a +9.8 weaning weight, and a Carcase Plus index of 186.
The fifteen-month-old ram was sired by Oakwood 130019.
Lot 7, the fourteen month old ram sired by Glencraig 150406, posted a 12.3 for post weaning weight and 175 for Carcase Plus index.
Mark Dennis bought the ram for his Kurrabi Park stud, Koppio.
Yalkuri, Meningie was the volume buyer with nine rams for a $733 average.
Quality Livestock agent David Whittenbury described the bidding competition as spirited throughout the sale for the very well presented offering.
“We are all very pleased with the clearance given the difficult season,” he added.
Quality Livestock conducted the sale with Mr Whittenbury and Simon Seppelt the auctioneers.
