A MAY 2017-drop Poll Dorset used as a ram lamb made a new $5200 stud record at Warrawindi’s 14th annual on-property sale at Penola on Friday.
John Bronca, Mount Gambier, bought the son of Bundara Downs 146194 on behalf of LR&TR Kent, Millicent, for his newly-established stud.
He said they were impressed by the clean points and muscling of the Lot 3 ram in the specially selected offering.
It was just one of many highlights in the Galpin family’s sensational sale, with a total clearance across all the three breeds and lift in the three averages.
The 60 South East and western Vic registered bidders lifted their sights with 148 Poll Dorsets averaging $1693 – up a whopping $449.
These rams were again catalogued in descending carcase plus index and this year the first 77 lots ranking at 200 or more.
This highlighted the stud’s focus on early growth and muscling.
A run of younger rams out of the stud’s top ewes were also keenly sought topping at $2400.
Caulfield Partners, Harrow, Vic, led the volume buyers with 14 Poll Dorsets to $1900 twice, averaging $1550 and eight Suffolks to $1400, averaging $1213.
John Williams, Kalangadoo, bought 12 Poll Dorsets to a $1600 high and SR&A Auld, Dergholm, Vic, secured nine rams for a $1644 average.
The Galpins catered for all buyers with Mason Galpin’s Warra M stud, doubling his Border Leicester offering.
The 20 rams, all sired by Coolawang 15-87, averaged $1560.
The $2600 highest priced ram sold to Limestone Ridge Estate, Coonawarra.
Bimbimbie Props, Lucindale, was the volume buyer with six rams for a $1767 average.
Warra-J, run by Jordan Galpin, sold 20 Suffolks for a $1225 average.
Stud co-principal David Galpins said with prime lambs at record highs and many clients already selling lambs for $200 this season it was pleasing to see them extend their budgets.
“Our 15 years of breeding is starting to pay off and people are having success with our sheep,” he said.
‘We are producing a product (lamb) the world wants and we are being paid a premium for it.”
Earlier this year the Galpins bought Vic stud Haven Park stud and next year will add 100 East Friesian cross maternal rams to their large offering.
TDC Penola and O’Connor & Graney conducted the sale with Matt Treglown and Ethan Bronca the auctioneers.
Mr Treglown said it was an “outstanding sale”.
