BEACHPORT’S Kenlorne Poll Dorset stud posted a new stud record average at its 28th annual on-property sale on Tuesday last week.
In a total clearance, Betty and Ken Walker sold 83 rams for a $1098 average, a lift of nearly $300 on 2017’s result.
Eleven registered bidders fought it out for the rams but the great support shown by local producers was testament to the stud’s ongoing commitment to producing good, honest, sound working rams.
Lot 1, by a Gloroy sire, was the first of two stud rams offered and was knocked down for the equal top money of $1700 to Bettes Ag, Keith.
Trent Bettes also bought Lot 7 for $1700 in his tally of six rams for a $1566 average.
Mr Bettes said the Kenlorne rams he bought in 2017 had thrown solid lambs with increased thickness and more weight for age.
Lot 2, the second of the stud rams offered, sold to JL Sutherland, Bray for $1200.
They bought nine rams for a $1088 average.
Repeat client Peter Altschwager, MD Altschwager & Co, Tantanoola, was the volume buyer with 15 rams for a $1140 average.
A close second, Altschwager Trading Trust, Tantanoola, bought 14 rams averaging $971.
The Lambert family, Bimbimbi Proprietors, Wattle Range, bought 13 rams to average $1292.
Elders stud stock auctioneer Tom Penna said he had noticed a significant difference in the lineup compared to the last time he saw them in 2016 with a lot more depth, width and thickness and increase in figures.
He said this clearly reflected the Walkers’ investment in good genetics.
Mr Walker said he was thrilled with the result and very proud of the very even lineup of upstanding rams with extra muscle and higher growth rates.
Kenlorne recently bought a new stud sire from Ulandi Park, Marrabel, for $9000.
