THE seventh Fleurieu Prime multi-vendor ram sale, held at the Strathalbyn Showground on Tuesday last week, featured a high quality offering from Windy Hill White Suffolks, Mount Compass, Pebble Stone Border Leicester and Romney studs, Macclesfield, Maydale Suffolks, Willunga, Loch Sloy Suffolks, Strathalbyn, and Urrbrae Suffolks, Urrbrae.
In the breakdown, 33 of 42 rams found homes, topping at $1000 and averaging $681.
Top price ram came from Maydale and sold to repeat buyer Nigel Clogg, Laura. The ram – 17058, an AI-bred son of WA sire Glencraig Kiwi – was judged the supreme interbreed ram at the Strathalbyn show the day before, testament to the quality offered at the sale.
Maydale principal Roland Floyd said although Maydale was only a small stud, he strived to breed the best possible rams he could. Conformation is his top breeding objective.
The Cloggs are repeat buyers and strong supporters of the Urrbrae Suffolk stud and took five rams averaging $780. The family’s lambs drop in July and finished on bean stubbles to sell in January.
Other volume buyers included DD&PB Schiller, Karoonda, who bought seven rams averaging $671. Peter Schiller said the rams offered at the sale were consistent, with good muscling, and do well in their environment. They are joined to Merino ewes for April/May lambing. Hefford Nominees, Wellington, bought six Suffolk rams averaging $650.
Windy Hill White Suffolk stud sold 17 of 18 rams averaging $612, Maydale cleared seven of eight rams averaging $757, Loch Sloy also sold seven of eight averaging $628, Urrbrae sold three of five averaging $666 and Pebble Stone offered two rams.
The sale was conducted by Landmark Strathalbyn with Gordon Wood the auctioneer.
