The fifth on-property sale for Castle Camps was the best to-date as the Willalooka stud recorded the highest top and average for both White Suffolks and Border Leicesters.
The Friday morning sale attracted buyers new and old, who competed strongly throughout for a very even run of rams.
The Border Leicesters – which the Carr family has bred since 1979 – cleared 63 of 70 to the overall sale top of $1900.
HM&AJ Telford & Sons, Mount Gambier, bought the 12-month-old ram, sired by Duenclin Cut Out 1505683, with a 7.44 post weaning weight, -0.07 PW Fat, 0.04 post weaning eye muscle depth, and a Border Leicester index of 118.45.
The White Suffolk portion proved the evenness of quality on offer at Castle Camps, with four reaching $1800.
CB&RA Walladge, Willalooka, bought the first pair – lot 13 and 14 – both July 2017-drops, with 191.78 and 187.44 respectively on Carcase Plus, which was added to their total of eight rams, averaging $1362.
KD Day & Sons, Padthaway, followed suit with the next two White Suffolks and paid $1800 for the two which boasted very similar Lamb 2020 scores of 112.45 and 112.29.
The Day’s finished with 10 averaging $1450 and other volume buyers included BJ&CB McMurray, Keith, with seven, averaging $928; PL&Y Walladge, Willalooka, bought six to $1400, averaging $1050; and return buyer SR&HM Graetz, Willalooka, bought five, averaging $1120.
Trott & Warner, Kingston, bought a mix of 13 rams averaging $677, while in the Border Leicesters, D&D Tarca, Naracoorte, finished with 11, averaging $727, and W&JM Busiko, Naracoorte, bought eight, averaging $650.
Stud principal Ian Carr was pleased that buyers kept coming back and said he is happy with how their breeding program is tracking.
“It was a good clearance with great support from repeat buyers, and a few new faces and we are more than happy with the sheep we put up, probably as good a lineup as they have ever put together,” he said.
The sale was conducted by Platinum Livestock Keith and Miller Whan & John.
