SUPERIOR length, muscle and growth through a consistent line of White Suffolks made for an increased top and average at Duenclin’s twentieth on-property sale at Perponda yesterday.
The Huxtable family sold 71 of 114 White Suffolks averaging $910, and 36 SAMM’s were also offered with 13 sold to $1600, averaging $823.
The small buying gallery pushed the top to $2600 – a lift of $900 on last year – for a 107-kilogram, June 2017-drop White Suffolk ram with breeding values of 8 millimetres fat depth, 45mm eye muscle depth and 103mm eye muscle width.
Recurrent top buyer, Peter Leedham, Kaylan, picked the ram for his early growth, and because “he had number one on his back”.
Volume buyers included C&J Domaschenz who bought 20 White Suffolks to $1100 averaging $815; Rich Farming, Gorke, bought 15 to $1000 averaging $820; and JN & ME Herrmann, Nhill, bought six averaging $950, which included the top price SAMM for $1600.
BJ&BG Pfeiffer, Parrakie, bought four, averaging $1200, AT&AG Evans, Karoonda, also picked up four averaging $725, and T Domaschenz & K Brennan, Naracoorte bought four averaging $700.
Stud principal Clinton Huxtable was “pleasantly surprised” with the sale results given the small number of buyers.
“We’ve had the same aim with our White Suffolks since 1997 – fast growth with muscling on the rear and good length and they seem to improve every year,” he said.
Elders Karoonda’s Eli Koch said Duenclin continue to put up good growing, well-bred rams and there was good interest from buyers despite the seasonal conditions.
The sale was conducted by Elders with Phil Nagel as auctioneer.
