A client of 25 years secured the top price ram for $2400 at Narcoota’s 35th annual on-property Poll Merino sale at Eudunda on Thursday last week.
The Grosser family sold 39 rams from 63 offered, averaging $933.
The $2400 top price ram was bought by SJ&TD Strauss, Mannum, and it had fleece measurements of 18.7 micron, 15.4 coefficient variation, 2.9 standard deviation and 99pc comfort factor.
Sired by Narcoota 6074, it weighed 97 kilograms and had a 44-millimetre eye muscle depth.
Stud principal Tim Grosser said the top price ram had excellent wool characteristics.
“It had a long staple length of white stylish wool and the ram was definitely in demand.”
Steven Strauss secured a further four rams, averaging $1600.
The second-highest price ram was sold to return clients of 22 years, Phil and Rhonda Klemm, Brinkworth, at $2000.
The 14-month-old ram’s fleece measured 19.9M, 15.4CV, 3.1SD and 99.8CF.
The Klemm family bought another ram at $1000.
Phil and Greg Sobey, Blanchetown, who have bought Narcoota’s rams for 30 years, were the sale’s volume buyer with seven rams to $950, averaging $800.
Peter Zadow, Blanchetown, bought five rams to $1100, averaging $770, while Peter and Brian Lee, Kulkami, secured four rams to $700, averaging $600.
Mr Grosser said as the sale progressed, competition among buyers decreased.
“Orders were filled early so it was obvious that there was a surplus number of rams offered that would not be cleared, a few past clients have reduced their ewe numbers too and therefore already have sufficient rams to service their flock,” he said.
Landmark Pfitzner and Kleinig, Eudunda, conducted the sale.
