Former SA Stud Merino Sheepbreeders Association executive officer John Burt has been recognised with a service award for his support and commitment to the association.
White River stud principal John Daniell, Minnipa, presented the framed certificate to Mr Burt during the Merino trophy presentations.
The former bank manager started with the organisation in August 1993, taking over from Julie Ashdown. He held the role until 2006 when he was succeeded by Gordon Mitzka.
Mr Daniell said Mr Burt was an exemplary executive officer for more than a decade, working well with Merino SA members to promote the breed and its activities.
“Older members of the association speak fondly of John’s professionalism, demeanour, attention to detail and unflappable calmness as he went about his work with immaculate bookkeeping skills,” Mr Daniell said.
For the past eight years Mr Burt, who lives in Adelaide, has volunteered at the Royal Adelaide Show as the chief administration steward in the Merino section.
His work includes tallying up points towards the most successful exhibitor awards and he has even created a computer program to make this easier.
“John goes about his role in a quiet, no-fuss manner on days that could become highly emotive with agitated exhibitors and demanding stewards,” Mr Daniell said.
Mr Burt said it was a “great surprise”.
He particularly enjoyed the “mateship” among the Merino fraternity and said he worked with some great presidents during his time as executive officer.
“In my days with the association, I would be in the office and often didn’t get over here to the show so my role here now is a nice change watching some of the judging,” he said.
“I have enjoyed renewing friendships with the breeders every year, but now it is their sons and even their grandsons taking over.
“I have enjoyed my time and I trust that I might be around for another few years yet.”
