After figuring a few times in the minor placings, it was Old Ashrose stud’s day to shine, winning the aggregate trophy in the Fibre Meat Plus class.
The Hallett-based stud had the highest scoring three rams in the class, which aims to identify young sires with superior meat and wool traits.
Old Ashrose stud principal Nick Wadlow, the new Merino SA president, rated success in the measurement class highly.
“We have never been at the top, but this year our rams had higher eye muscle depths with lower body weights,” he said.
Old Ashrose’s three rams were all by different sires showing the depth of the breeding.
“The families represented by those rams are our top families at home,” Mr Wadlow said. “They have all got fantastic wools and skins and great meat attributes too.”
The trio all had EMD scans of 40 millimetres or more.
Two of the three rams were sold in the Adelaide Merino Ram Sale, including lot 12 – a 19.7-micron ram which sold for $20,000 to Old Kelvale, Burra, and Allala, Kapinnie.
Old Ashrose will retain the other ram.
