ENTRIES from throughout SA, and one or two interstate, have been going under the eyes of judges ahead of the Royal Adelaide Show’s grains and fodder competition.
Grains and fodder committee chair Bill Rowett, Allendale East, said the overall entry numbers of 230 were good, albeit down slightly on last year, but hay entries had risen.
New this year was the addition of two national competitions, sponsored by Pasture Genetics and Nufarm.
Mr Rowett said they were pleased with the response to those competitions and are hopeful the competitions will continue and grow.
“We had an entry from Vic, which is exciting since it is a national award,” he said.
Among the competition prizes is $5000 towards an international study trip.
“We’d been talking about (the national competitions) for two years but actually started it in February,” Mr Rowett said.
“To get to where we are now, since then, is quite pleasing.”

This year’s feature grain is durum, which will be a major part of their display in the grains pavilion.
Next year the feature grain will be barley.
“We’re getting the industry right behind us,” Mr Rowett said.
