SOUTH Australia’s beef cattle, dairy and sheep producers can now better manage, protect and promote their strong on-farm biosecurity practices, with the launch of One Biosecurity.

The state’s cattle and sheep producers are being encouraged to sign-up to the new on-farm biosecurity management program at PIRSA One Biosecurity.

The new voluntary program was developed by Primary Industries and Regions South Australia in collaboration with Livestock SA.

A key component of the program is the new online functions, where producers can create an online business profile, containing details of their farming enterprises, biosecurity practices and disease management.

It will enable producers to quickly generate a government and industry endorsed biosecurity plan for their property and they can choose to make their profiles public for other registered users, including other producers, stock agents, cattle buyers and processors, to view.

Biosecurity SA Executive Director Will Zacharin said there is a growing demand for information about on-farm biosecurity practices, at all levels of the livestock chain.

“This program will help meet that demand and increase transparency in livestock trading within SA, while at the same time managing the most common biosecurity risks,” Mr Zacharin said.

“One Biosecurity places the SA livestock industry as a leader in addressing and meeting market expectations for transparency and traceability both internationally and within Australia.

“I encourage all our state’s beef, dairy and sheep producers to sign up and become a One Biosecurity producer.

“The more One Biosecurity producers, the stronger the program becomes and the greater protection it will offer our livestock industries.”

Livestock SA president Joe Keynes said One Biosecurity offers producers a smarter, practical and more effective way of enhancing and promoting the good biosecurity practices and animal health management.

“This will place the SA livestock industry as a leader in addressing and meeting market expectations for transparency and traceability both internationally and within Australia,” Mr Keynes said.

“Agents and prospective buyers will also be able to use the One Biosecurity portal to search for sellers of a specific class of animal or with a specified biosecurity status – allowing them to make safer, more informed livestock purchasing decisions.”

Another important aspect of One Biosecurity will be the verification system, managed by PIRSA, which will see online checks of producer claims as well as random and targeted on-farm assessments.
