Greenfields stud claimed a double victory at the Crystal Brook Show, winning both the SA ram of the year and SA ewe of the year.
This is the first year the winner of the grand champion ewe has been eligible to represent SA at the Rabobank National Merino Sheep Show, Dubbo, NSW, later this month.
The ram will also be representing the state at the competition for the title of Australian ram of the year.
The ram, which was the champion strong wool entry, was described by Greenfield co-principals Robert and James Sullivan as one that had always stood out for its “sheer scale”.
“It’s an incredibly tall and long-bodied, big upstanding ram,” Robert said.
“It has rich, stylish, soft-handling strong wool.”
Judge Ian Michaels, Nyowee, Balaklava, said selecting the grand champion was not an easy decision but it was an “outstanding ram”.
“(It has) overall length of body, combined with terrific nourishment through the wool,” he said.
Greenfields also won the group of three class.
