CONSTRUCTION works on a new boarding house and associated footbridge at Prince Alfred College have begun, following an extensive planning, approval and tender evaluation process.
It has been full steam ahead since February 5 this year, with plenty of excitement surrounding the project.
Boarding has been a big part of college life at Princes since it began in 1869 and makes a variety of contributions to the life and culture of the college.
PAC currently has the largest boys' boarding program in South Australia.
This new state-of-the-art facility reflects the college's commitment to its boarding program, which is a vital part of its history, its identity and its future.
The total cost of this facility will be in excess of $20 million, with the project being funded through a combination of accumulated reserves, borrowing and fundraising.
It is anticipated the duration of the construction process will be about one year and the college aims to have the new facility ready for use in the first half of 2019.
Upon completion of the building, the current boarding facilities will be demolished to provide additional open space and extra car parking.
And in the longer term the space has the potential for future building projects or other facilities.
Traffic and pedestrian flows within the college will be altered to allow improved ease of movement, particularly at either end of the school day.
This project is a continuation of the $46 million in capital projects that have been executed by the college across the past 10 years to update and improve the facilities for the college boys, and will be one of the projects featured as part of the school’s sesquicentenary celebrations in 2019.
