Grain growers have the opportunity to gather at Riverton next month for a GRDC update and, hear about outcomes from research that have the potential to underpin improved farm practices and profitability.
Held on August 8, the update will feature several expert speakers who will deliver the latest research findings which have relevance to and implications for growers in the region.
GRDC grower relations manager – South Darren Arney said topics about boosting barley productivity, controlling key cropping insect pests, soil moisture probe advancements, optimising canola growth and managing ryegrass will be discussed.
“The information, insights and advice to be extended at the Update will inform growers’ decision-making for the remainder of this season and beyond,” he said.
Among the speakers will be Agbyte‘s Leighton Wilksch who will delve into the use of soil moisture probes, discussing the effectiveness of this technology in light of recent improvements in weather forecasts, soil moisture mapping and canopy temperature sensors.
SARI’s Kenton Porker will explore options for lifting barley productivity in the higher rainfall zones.
He will discuss the role of barley in rotations and will review some promising new varieties.
SARDI entomologist Greg Baker will outline findings from research into mites and aphids, providing an overview on the risk of damage from these cropping pests and control options, as well as an update on predictive tools for pest management and neonicotinoid use.
SARDI researcher Andrew Ware will discuss optimising canola growth through critical agronomy, focusing on time of sowing, water use efficiency, nitrogen requirements by variety and utilising frost management data.
Controlling ryegrass with tactics such as newer chemistry, time of sowing and optimising efficacy of pre-emergents will be the subject of a presentation by the University of Adelaide’s Chris Preston.
Dr Preston will also update growers on the status of ryegrass herbicide resistance.
Partnered by the Hart Field-Site Group, the update will be held at the Riverton Civic Hall from 9-1pm.
