The much needed rainfall that arrived in the Lower Mid North and Murray Mallee in the past week gave Mark Brown’s pastures the growth boost to potentially help save his stock from losing any further condition.
Mr Brown runs 700 Merino ewes at Keyneton and Sedan, and received 45mm in the past two week’s.
Mr Brown said after an “ordinary” start to autumn, the break had increased native grass pick for ewes and this season’s lambs.
“If we get summer rainfall the pasture looks after itself with native grasses but it did not happen this year so we have had to feed hay and straw,” he said. “Sedan is very grim but it is improving after the break we just had.
“We only had about a 65 per cent lambing there because of the lack of feed available and a tough start.”
