PRICES jumped $30-40 from the previous month at the Mount Gambier store sale on Friday.
With a better quality yarding, both breeding and condition wise, younger cattle were up to $100 better off in places.
Heavy Angus steers weighing 400 kilograms-plus sold from $2.56 a kilogram to $3.03/kg, while heavy coloured steers, 400kg+, sold from $2.14-$2.90/kg.
Mid weight Angus steers, weighing 350-400kg, sold at rates from $2.18-$3.16/kg, while coloured steers in this weight range sold from $2.35-$2.95/kg.
Angus steers weighing from 300-350kg sold at prices from $2.28-$2.99/kg and coloured steers of the same weights sold from $2.77-$3.01/kg.
Lighter weight Angus steers, weighing less than 300kg, sold from $2.76-$3.43/kg, with no coloured steers in this class.
Thomas Foods International bought 114 steers including the top priced pen of the day - five Angus steers, 445kg, at $1290 or $2.90/kg sold a/c RW&T Dihm, Suttontown, along with 26 Granite Ridge-blood Angus steers, 369kg, at $1140 or $3.09/kg sold a/c JG&CK Clarke, Kingston SE and 17 Angus steers, 382kg, at $1150 or $3.01/kg sold a/c Bask Family Trust, Kingston SE.
Delenal sold 29 Angus steers, weighing from 356-384kg, for an av of $1097. Their top draft, 384kg, sold at $1180 or $2.99/kg to Ray White Keatley, Mt Gambier. Delenal also sold 15 Simmental steers, 406kg, at $1180 or $2.90/kg to TFI, and a draft of five Murray Grey steers, 362kg, at $850 or $2.35/kg to Creek Livestock.
Messamurray, Naracoorte, sold six Sterita Park-bld Angus steers, 425kg, February/March 2017 drop, European Union-accredited, at $1220 or $2.87/kg to Ray White Keatley Livestock, and a draft of Pasturefed Certified Assurance Scheme-eligible, EU Angus-cross steers, July/Aug 2017 drop, 234kg, at $770 or $3.29/kg to Green Triangle Livestock.
Kumara SE Pty Ltd, Mt Gambier, sold 113 PCAS, Pathfinder-bld Angus steers, 10 months, with weights from 256-339kg, for an av of $771. Their top draft, 339kg, sold at $980 or $2.89/kg to Pinkerton Palm Hamlyn & Steen.
Iluka, Beachport, sold 24 Angus steers, 8-9 months, with weights from 314-341kg, for an av of $903 to Miller Whan & John. Iluka also sold a draft of eight Angus-cross steers, 8-10 months, 330kg, at $960 or $2.91/kg, and 12 Hereford steers, 8-9 months, 306kg, at $850 or $2.77/kg to Thomas DeGaris & Clarkson.
Cows and calves sold similarly to May prices, with a similar quality yarding and heifers again pretty tough going.
P Zukauskas sold 14 black baldy cows with 14 Angus calves at foot, 1-2 months, not rejoined at $1640 to Scott Creek Livestock.
LaLee, Mt Gambier, sold 12, 2013 drop, Angus and Angus-cross cows, fourth calvers with 12 Angus CAF, not rejoined at $1440 to Miller Whan & John, who bought a draft of seven mixed age Angus cows with seven Angus CAF not rejoined at $1100.
No heavy heifers (weighing 400kg+) were offered, with only a limited number from 350-400kg, selling from $2.28-$2.80/kg.
The majority of heifers sold, fell into the 300-350kg weight range, with prices from $2.09-$2.82/kg.
Lighter heifers weighing less than 300kg sold from $2.13-$2.56/kg.
JG&CK Clarke, Kingston SE, topped the heifer market with 20 Granite Ridge-bld Angus heifers, 351kg, at $985 or $2.80/kg, sold to Miller Whan & John.
Patanga Pastoral, Avenue Range, sold 36 South Bundarra-bld Shorthorn heifers, with weights from 315-345kg, for an av of $861. Their top draft, 345kg, sold at $975 or $2.82/kg to Miller Whan & John, who also bough Patanga’s draft of 16 Charolais/Shorthorn heifers, 303kg, at $810 or $2.67/kg.
C Johnstone sold 5 Angus-cross heifers, 328kg, at $910 or $2.77/kg to Creek Livestock.
Ted Freckle Ranch, Penola, sold 22 Poll Hereford heifers, 295kg, at $630 or $2.13/kg to Mingbool Station
M Tilley, Port MacDonnell, sold 12 Angus and Angus-cross heifers, 12 months, with weights from 341-379kg for an av of $891. The top draft, 379kg, sold at $950 or $2.50/kg.
