WORKING draught horses will have their day again – next Sunday for the Heavy Horse Field Day at Clayton Farm Heritage Museum and Farm.
Held at the Bordertown museum, the event will feature local horses, as well as teams travelling from Vic.
Guests will get to see the horses in action – harnessed up and performing ploughing using historic equipment held permanently on site at the historic farm, as well as other demonstrations of their power and majesty.
South Australian Working Draught Horse Association’s Ross Blewitt will be convening the heavy horse events and displays, and said he was looking forward to using the old harrows.
He said by hooking up a few draught horses to the horseworks, it would show the crowd just how farm work was carried out by the big equines in days of old, before modern farm machinery came along.
The day will also have market stalls, music and a hobby-horse gymkhana for the kids.
The Tatiara Palette Painters have been busy creating works for an exciting art exhibition that will have a draught horse theme, with a major prize on offer kindly donated by Tatiara District Council.
Blacksmiths will showcase their work, and even a flock of sheep will get a look in on the action – they will have their fleece clipped using blade shears, with their freshly shorn fleece immediately spun in a demonstration that is sure to delight.
- Gates open June 10 at 9.30am, adult entry $10, pensioners $7 and children and students $2.
