FARMERS can get extra insight into weather forecasts and soil moisture as part of a series of free webinars hosted by the Bureau of Meteorology.
The interactive online June events will be hosted by weather, water, climate and ocean information experts.
A seminar on ways to get real-time soil moisture estimates for the location will give tips on the best ways to collect data to make informed decisions.
As the only source of information about the landscape water balance for the whole of Australia, the Australian Landscape Water Balance provides nationally consistent modelled data on soil moisture, runoff, evapotranspiration, deep drainage and precipitation in near real-time.
Another session will show how groundwater information is collected.
Groundwater is a major source of water for many urban and rural communities, as well as industry and agriculture—in some places it is the only source.
It also sustains many rivers and wetlands in dry periods.
As a largely hidden resource, it is much harder to measure.
There is also the opportunity to learn about the variety of water forecasting products offered by the Bureau, and how to access and use them.
The Bureau provides an extensive range of water forecasting services—from short-term flood forecasts and warnings for the next few days, to streamflow forecasts for the next week, and out to the next three months ahead.
