THE release of sterile fruit fly, bait spotting and collection of host fruit has aided in lifting Brooklyn Park’s quarantine restriction.
Brooklyn Park and a number of surrounding suburbs was quarantined in February following the detection of Queensland fruit fly larvae.
A total of 2372 kilograms of host fruit was collected throughout the outbreak area.
Primary Industries and Regional Development minister Tim Whetstone said the state government maintained a rigorous fruit fly program, including the use of sterile insect technology, to ensure the Q-fly pest did not become established in SA.
“Queensland fruit fly does not normally exist in SA, and can only be brought into our state from infested fruit originating in the eastern states,” he said.
From 2016 to 2017, SA’s horticultural industry was worth $1.26 billion.
