Mid North Merino breeder Peter Meyer has been elected the new president of the Australian Association of Stud Merino Breeders at the organisation’s AGM, held in Adelaide last week.
The Mulloorie stud principal, who has been vice-president for the past four years, said he was looking forward to representing the nation’s stud breeders.
He was particularly keen to further the association’s Breed More Merino Ewes campaign and would like to see another five million ewes mated to Merino rams to grow the national flock.
He said Merinos were easily the most profitable sheep and provided a reliable income for those in areas of seasonal risk.
“You have always got a saleable product whether they are 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 years old,” he said.
He said it was exciting times with wool prices hitting new highs each week and strong demand from China, Korea and Europe.
The only hiccup was the furore surrounding the live export trade.
“Obviously we don’t like to see the footage that has been in the news and there are things that need tightening up, but we need the boat trade,” he said.
Max Wilson, Wilgunyah stud, Dirranbandi, Qld, was elected vice-president with NSW breeder Angus Beveridge, Wyuna stud, Gilgandra, the treasurer.
