NARACOORTE
Yarding: 1955
Steers to $1344
Heifers to $1095
Cows with CAF to $1410
THERE were opportunities to snap up some value buys at the monthly Naracoorte store cattle sale on Thursday last week.
Landmark livestock senior account manager Brendan Fitzgerald said export types and black steers weighing more than 300 kilograms sold quite well.
“Good cattle sold just as well as the last sale, but once you got anything off-type, opportunities opened up,” he said.
Thomas DeGaris & Clarkson director Darren Maney said the yarding’s quality was mixed.
“There were quite a few cattle that had either done it very hard in the past two months or had come from further afield,” he said.
“But considering the present prime market, I think we got out of it pretty well.”
The highest price for steers was $1344. This was paid for 10 Angus steers weighing 507 kilograms from AT&RA Bradey, Kaniva, Vic, equating to $2.65/kg.
The same vendor also sold the top price pregnancy-tested in-calf cows for $1060 to Green Triangle Livestock Mount Gambier.
Selling near the top of the sale for steers was JH Ryan & Sons, Lucindale, with 25 Hazeldean-blood steers, 484kg, sold for $1300 to Teys for their Charlton feedlot in Vic. Teys also bought a further three pens from the same vendor, with 23 at 448kg for $1220 or $2.72/kg, 22 at 428kg for $1180 or $2.75/kg and five at 448kg for $1170 or $2.61/kg.
DC&DG Brown, Padthaway, sold 20 Lancaster/Duck Island-bld steers, 445kg, for $1250 or $2.80/kg to Hardwicks.
Selling very well on a kilogram basis were NJ&G Steer, Lameroo, with 22 Bull Oak Well-blds at 281kg that made $1010 or $3.59/kg, as well a further nine at 341kg that made $1050 or $3.07/kg.
Landmark International bought more than 100 head, including 18 steers from Winterlake, Kingston, with 18 Pathfinder-blds, 343kg, that made $1050 or $3.06/kg.
LS Johnson & Son, Naracoorte, topped the heifer section with 13 Simmental-Angus at 394kg from their Ross Plains property, which made $1095 or $2.77/kg. The same vendors also sold a further 17 Simmental-Angus heifers, 332kg, from their Springbank property at $930 or $2.80/kg and nine Simmental-Angus-Hereford heifers, 352kg, for $950 or $2.69/kg.
The highest price for cows with calves at-foot was $1410. This was for four mixed age cows with calves aged two months old to 8mo.
