DAYS Whiteface stud’s decision to sell all its top bulls on-farm produced an on-property sale record of $26,000 at its combined annual Poll Hereford bull sale on Monday, held in conjunction with Allendale stud.
The sale topper, Days Horizon M028, offered by Lachy and Lou Day, created a lot of presale attention at the Bordertown sale.
The Days Wizard J204 son was out of a heifer and admired by many for the amazing depth of quality breeding in its pedigree, plus exceptional performance.
It was in the top one per cent on Breedplan for gestation length, scrotal size and eye muscle area, plus the top 5pc on carcaseweight and all the breed's indices.
This converted into active bidding by several studs.
Yarram Park Herefords, Willaura, Vic,who flew in on a one bull mission were the sucessful buyers.
The $26,000 sale top was $2000 more than 2017’s record.
Fifty seven registered bidders from three states converged on the Day families’ combined sale, ensuring the top end of the sale was exceptionally strong with 22 bulls making $10,000 or more.
However with very dry conditions in the northern pastoral zones, regular station orders were lacking.
This resulted in extreme value in the latter half of the sale.
The $8568 average reflected the sale’s strength but was down $946 on last year’s combined result.
Days Whiteface stud had 18 of the 22 five figured bulls after deciding to bypass the Wodonga and Dubbo National Show & Sales for the first time.
Over Days sold 44 of 49 bulls for a superb $10,049 average.
Fellow vendors Alastair and Jayne Day, Allendale stud, had a solid sale selling 33 of 36 bulls to $18,000 and averaging $6727.
However their lower average was reflected by them reserving their star lots for both the national sales.
Strong sale supporter Rodwells Mansfield agent Jamie Beckingsale and his central Vic buyers were a dominant forces securing six bulls for a $9500 average.
Leading the volume stakes was Tim Roberts-Thomson, Howquadale Station, Mansfield, Vic, who bought four of them to $8000, while PL & T O’Halloran purchased one at $9000.
Michael Hanlon, Howes Creek Station, Mansfield, Vic paid the sale’s second top price of $22,000 for Days Hemisphere M065.
The Injemira Anzac J188 son was a beautifully balanced bull with outstanding Breedplan data, including a Grassfed index of +161 – the highest in the catalogue.
The Witherow family, Shiloh Park, Mt Gambier and their manager John Richardson bought four bulls for a $10,000 average.
Three of these came from the Allendale offering, but their top buy, and the sale’s overall third top price of $20,000, was paid for Days Blaser M041.
M041 was another very impressive Injemira Anzac J188 son.
First-time buyers Max and Jan Randall, Lynwood Pastoral, Cobbadah Station, Cobbadah, NSW, along with their Landmark Tamworth agent Howard Carter, left their mark the sale.
They bought three bulls for a $11,333 average, including Allendale Collingwood M012, the $18,000 top priced bull offered by Alastair and Jayne Day.
The Randalls, who run 900 commercial Poll Hereford cows, said they liked everything about Collingwood, especially its magnificent temperament.
“It has great length, is balanced and has real depth of breeding behind it with Allendale having kept a full brother,” Mr Randall said.
Cam Anderson and Sarah Harvey, Eringoarrah Station, Winderadeen Corporation, Wantabadgery, NSW, were one volume buying account from the past two years who were back and bidding strongly.
They bought nine bulls to a $12,000 top twice for a $8778 average.
“The quality is amazing, with such evenness right through, yet we felt it was still a very affordable sale”, Mr Anderson said.
Chris England and his son James, The Snuggery, Kingston pushed Days Homestead M033 to $18,000 for its length, balance and great calving ease figures.
Senior Park, Bordertown, paid $16,000 for Days Benedict M099 to also be right near the pointy end of the sale.
David and Susan Sleigh, Sleigh Pastoral, Ruffey, Vic, bought two outstanding bulls for a $15,000 average.
They went to $13,000 for Allendale Anzac M001 and three lots later outlaid $17,000 for Days Hat Trick M047.
Harlock Pastoral, Bool Lagoon bought two Days prefix bulls for $15,000 and $11,000.
The sale was interfaced with AuctionsPlus for the first time with four lots knocked down online.
Both vendors were very happy with the overall result.
“It was great to get such good support with buyers coming from near and far," Alastair said.
“There was real value at the end of the sale, but we were happy to have such a good overall result.”
Lachy Day said they knew pastoral orders would be lacking so clearance was always going to be a question mark.
“We believe we were able to present very well-made bulls with very good performance levels, and were very happy with the support we received,” he said.
The sale was conducted by Elders and Landmark with Ross Milne and Gordon Wood the auctioneers.
“The commercial relevance and industry influence of these two studs is outstanding, with the natural doing ability and fleshing on the bulls clearly evident all day,” Mr Wood said.
Mr Milne said it was a strong result with a very good top end and a pretty good clearance overall, especially considering pastoral conditions.
“Having said that, there was a large field of bulls that presented real value for money,” he said.
