TAKE a tour through the&nbsp;Stock Journal&nbsp;archives, as we revisit&nbsp;January&nbsp;1993. It was a busy time for beef producers gearing up for the 1993 Stud&nbsp;Beef Field Days and&nbsp;the state’s top beef was judged at the&nbsp;1993 State Bank SA Beef Carcase Competition. The month also saw crop producers&nbsp;counting their losses following extensive floods and it was a busy time for&nbsp;wool producers at the Adelaide wool sales.&nbsp;

Marradong Pastorual Co manager Alan Mabon, Elders auctioneer Mike Newton and Marradong principal John Evns at a weaner sale at Penola where Poll Hereford-Shorthorn/Hereford cross steers sold at $440 a head. 

Garth Kewley and Craig Mattschos, Gumeracha, sold two 480 kilogram Herefords and two Belted Galloways both weighting 490kg at the Gepps Cross market. 

Parawa prime lamb breeders were out in force at Gepps Cross where Grant Mayfield, Maylands, sold 300 lambs to a top of $50.60, Bill Pearce sold 258 prime lambs and Bob Fairchild sold 110 South Coast Dorset cross prime lambs.

This Charolais steer bred at Kadlunga, Mintaro and entered by the Lower Light feedlot of Ted and Steve Jones, scored the highest points in the State Bank SA Beef Carcase Competition, but was disqualified for being 9 kilograms overweight, with Steve Jones, and Nigel and Hamish Gosse, Kadlunga.

Ron Short of Farrell Flat was selling 150 bales of premium merino wool in Adelaide with Ian Jaensch of Elders Burra in the Elders Wool Store. 

Flies have been the bane of summer for Andrew and Virginia Hawker, East Bungaree Merino stud, Burra. Andrew, pictured with stock overseer Paul Schutz, and a treated Merino ewe, said all of his stock had been jetted twice, and some three times. 

Thirty-nine degree heat made conditions tough for the Elders Ltd team taking bids at WN and RN Bainger's annual weaner cattle sale. The sale, held at Naracoorte, saw 1351 head gross $494466.

Looking over wool on the Elders show floor in Adelaide were Tony Gooden, Elders Jamestown, Sandy martin, Coolatoo, Jamestown, who was selling 30 bales of lambswool, Di Capper of NSW, and Geoff Matters, Spalding, who was selling 80 bales of Merino wool. 

Bruce Treloar, Elders Adelaide, and John Smith from the Deep Water Pastoral Company were among the crowd looking over the offering at the Western Station's 17 annual weaner cattle circuit sale in Western Victoria. 

Geoff Agnew, Tom Baker and Margaret Baker from Woonalee, Furner, sold cattle which made to $488 at the Simmental weaner sale at Naracoorte. 

Ian and Caroline Collie, Collian Park Limousin stud, Willow Grove, Vic, with the senior champion bull and female they exhibited at the 1992 Sydney Royal Show.

Bruce Graefe and Dean Simpson of Jamestown sold 150 wether hoggets, making $27.20 at a Jamestown market. 

A Red Poll steer from the Wilson family's Oakwood property at Minlaton was a merit award winner on the hoof at the 1993 State Bank SA Beef Carcase Competition. It sold for $2.54 a kilogram and went on the score 78.7 points as a carcase. With the steer are Oakwood's Alan and Peter Wilson. 

Andrew Doering, Walmona, Truro, with a purebred Santa Gertrudis, winner of class 5 in teh SA Beef Carcase Competition. 

Adrian Goode, Wangolina, Kingston, presented 184 bales at the Adelaide wool sales, part of which was inspected by Phil Atkinson, Elders Gillman.

Cleve farming brother Kevin and Warren Elson are aiming to control water erosion through contouring, minimum tillage and rotations to boost soil fertility. 

Brinkworth eventing enthusiast Kylie Heinjus took up a new challenge as the Clare Valley entrant for the Miss SA Awards. 

Richard Warwick with some of the family's historical memborabilia on Holowiliena Station. The family's record keeping had been prodigious also, with diaries, ledgers, and note books keeping an invaluable track of daily events dating back to 1864 carefully stored. 

Miland farmer Graham Blackwell showed SA Farmer's Federation prosident Tim Scholz the damage floods had caused to his crops. Graham said he lost about $120,000 in yield losses and downgrading. 

Jamie McTaggart of Oakden Hill Station in the Far North brought down 2200 sheep to the Jamestown market. The sheep were in outstanding condition owing to 20 inches of rain falling throughout the year, with ewes selling to $24.40 and wether lambs to $25.

Winning carcase in class one of the 1993 State Bank SA Beef Carcase Competition was a purebred Angus from Wellington Lodge, Tailem Bend. Shown inspecting the carcase was Neil Stanley, Noranda, Keith, whose Angus entry was second in the same class, and Keith McFarlane, Wellington Lodge. 

Anne Petch, Pentwyn Vale Red Poll stud, Loxton, winner of class 7, grain fed steer/heifer 181-129 kilograms, with 78.6 points, and joint winner of the Stock Journal purebred feedlot competition in the SA Beef Carcase Competition.
