ALL but one of the 30 well-bred Angus bulls on offer cleared to $8000 at Yerwal Estate’s 16th annual on-property sale near Lucindale on Monday.
With the stud’s focus on a high standard in breed type, temperament and market suitability, the bulls sold consistently to repeat and new buyers from Naracoorte, Keith, Millicent, Mount Burr, Penola and Kangaroo Island to average $5189 – slightly down on last year’s average of $5224.
The first three lots sold solidly for $7000, $6500 and $7000, respectively, before lot 4, Yerwal Magic, became the money maker for the day, making the sale high of $8000 to Dean Coddington, Elders Keith, for Roseleigh Angus, Pinnaroo.
Mr Coddington said Yerwal Magic was “something the Cowley family had been looking for to influence their stud”.
“These genetics will help push the stud forward into the future, this bull being a very good type, with good length, good depth of body and being a great overall package,” Mr Coddington said.
Roseleigh Angus stud’s Mat Cowley said his interest in Yerwal Magic been piqued by its “interesting pedigree”.
Mr Cowley said the combination of Vermont Dream bloodlines on the sire side and Lagrand Lady bloodlines on the female side made for fresh and exciting genetics to introduce into the Roseleigh herd.
Landmark stud stock auctioneer Richard Miller described the $8000 sale-topper as having “a big index and with huge depth and capacity”.
The 22-month-old sire – a Yerwal Juggernaut J23 son – weighed 800 kilograms with an eye muscle area figure of +5.6, IMF of +1.2 and +21 for milk.
In all, three bulls made $7000. LT&JM Wilson, through TDC Penola, bought lot 1, RC&R Legoe, through Elders Lucindale, successfully bid on lot 23 and Nick Radford, Radford Pastoral, Penola secured lot 3.
Mr Radford, the volume buyer at the past three Yerwal Estate Angus sales, bought nearly half of the catalogue, ending the day with 14 bulls between $4000 and $7000, averaging $5250.
Three bulls will be heading across to Kangaroo Island. Regular buyers Bruce and Libby Creek, for White Corsair, bought three, paying $4000, $6000 and $6500 to average $5500.
DJ,GJ&RA Brook, Naracoorte, took home two bulls at $4000 and $6000.
Mr Miller said it was a pleasing result for the Burow family, returning a very good average which was “not too dissimilar to 2017”.
He said there was an expectation for a “fair portion of sales this year to be down”, in line with easing cattle prices, but was happy at how consistent the sale results were.
“The depth and quality shown throughout the catalogue was a tribute to Regan and was underpinned by usual volume and repeat buyers,” Mr Miller said.
He said the even lineup of good value bulls offered buyers the chance to secure the sires of choice without any extreme tops, and ended up with a good average.
Yerwal Estate stud principal Regan Burow was very happy with the “really good, solid sale” and the consistency of the sale team, and was pleased to have great support from regular and new buyers.
He and his wife Karen are already looking forward to 2019, with the introduction of new genetics including Matauri Reality and Equator bloodlines and Gatsby for extra carcase.
