AN outbreak of Queensland fruit fly has been declared in the West Hindmarsh area.
The detection of a gravid (with eggs) female was discovered on Monday and since then an 1.5 kilometre outbreak area has been established around the outbreak centre.
SA is the only mainland state that is fruit fly free, which protects the states $1.25 billion horticulture industry.
In addition a 15km suspension area was also established beyond the 1.5km outbreak area by Biosecurity SA.
Commercial growers within the suspension area can apply treatments under accreditation to move fruit fly.
The quarantine and suspension areas will remain in place until at least mid March.
