HEIFER prices came within a few cents a kilogram of their steer counterparts on day two of the Naracoorte weaner sale on Friday, with particularly strong demand for future Angus breeders.

The majority of the 1711 yarding made between $3.00 a kilogram and $3.30/kg, but surpassing this was the herd reduction of Weeroona Pastoral Co, Keith, which made $3.50-$3.61/kg.

The complete 2017-drop of Roseleigh blood, Angus heifers –  225 averaged an impressive $1246.

This included the $1455  top priced heifers  – 16 weighing 403 kilograms which made $3.61/kg to Elders Lucindale.

“The calves were soft and well doing cattle- they were absolutely magnificent,” Rodwells agent Craig Escott said.

The annual offering from S&R DiGiorgio & Sons, Lucindale, was also keenly sought  with 257 Sterita Park bloods topping at $1129 and averaging $1008.

This equated to $3.30/kg.

The previous day DiGiorgio’s 444 steers topped at $1414 and averaged $1192 or $3.34/kg.

Vendor Nanni DiGiorgio said the family were thrilled to average only $100 a head less than last year’s record-breaking sale across their steers and heifers. This was largely due to their heavier weights.

“It makes a huge difference knowing you have got people sourcing your cattle year after year,” he said.

“It gives us great confidence we are going about it in the right way’.”

Other notable heifer sales included 23 Angus from SJ&CK Tierney, Naracoorte, which made $1205.

Jaylyn Pastoral, Strathalbyn, sold 66 Angus to $1165, av $1080.

Most coloured heifers made $2.80/kg to $3.10/kg.

B&L Livestock, Bathurst, NSW, secured more than 300 Angus to go into a Wagyu program, while Garrison Cattle Feeders, Murray Downs, NSW, and Hardwicks, Kyneton, Vic, each bought nearly 150 head.
