STUD clients bought the two top price rams at the Graham family’s Glencorrie Border Leicester ram sale at Sandilands on Friday.
Ashley Corkhill, Normanhurst Border Leicester stud, Boorowa, NSW, bought a $4000 ram that weighed 125 kilograms and measured 120.6 on Lambplan’s Maternal $ index.
Mr Corkhill bought another ram at $2000.
He was a first-time buyer at Glencorrie and said there was plenty to like about the stud’s rams.
“I was very impressed with the lineup of rams, it’s very even,” he said.
“I’m impressed by the length of body they’ve got in their sheep, and the good, even wool type.
“They’re good rams that have a lot of what I’m chasing with my stud. They have a lot of barrel and meat on them.”
The other $4000 ram was knocked down to Nathan Geue, buying on behalf of his father Anthony Geue, Vanita stud, Kingston SE.
It was the stud’s first time buying at Glencorrie.
The ram weighed 125kg and measured 112.9 on the Maternal $ index.
Nathan said Glencorrie rams were good on their feet and had good wools and structure.
The overall sale average was very similar to last year, at $1342.
More rams were offered this year, with 87 rams selling from 92 offered, resulting in a clearance rate of 94 per cent.
Volume buyers and new clients AL&PE McInnes, Booborowie, purchased seven rams to $2100, averaging $1085.
Other Mid North buyers included TJ&BB Clements, Narridy, with five rams to $1500, averaging $1360; EA Dennis, Baroota, six to $1700, averaging $1683; and Munduney Station, Spalding, four to $1600, averaging $1475.
Return South East clients included EH Pitt, Lucindale, four rams to $1700, averaging $1425, and RS Tregoweth, Lucindale, four to $2000, averaging $1825.
The sale was conducted by Elders and Landmark, with Elders stud stock agent Tom Penna auctioneering.
Mr Penna was impressed by the consistency in the lineup and the wool quality.
“There was very strong competition in the top end of the sale,” he said.
“There was also great value in the later parts, with terrific buying in the $600 to $1000 range.”
Glencorrie principal Craig Graham was happy with the sale result.
“I thought it was the best lineup we’ve ever had,” he said.
“Our wool quality has improved a lot in the past couple of years, while keeping the good back-end in the sheep and the conformation.”
The Grahams run 3500 first-cross ewes on Kangaroo Island
“They can go through some tough conditions on KI, and our three stud sires don’t lose weight, even when they’re working hard, and I think that’s showing through in the young rams we’re offering,” Mr Graham said.
