COOLANA sold bulls to $14,000 at Chatsworth, Vic, on Friday in one of its best drafts of two-year-old Angus bulls offered to-date, according to stud principal Mark Gubbins.
The top price bull Coolana Black Pearl L666 was bought by GE&AM Hiscock, Morgiana, Hamilton, Vic.
Gerard Hiscock was impressed with the bull’s overall figures, great growth, high milk and overall softness.
Figures included +4.9 for birthweight, +54 for 200-day, +92 for 400-day, and +126 for 600-day growth with an eye muscle area of +6.3 and marbling +2.2.
The bull – by imported sire Sydgen Black Pearl 2006 – will replace the Coolana bull the Hiscocks bought in 2012.
The Stoney family, Ellingerrin Pastoral Co, Inverleigh, Vic, bid to $12,000 for lot 8 – a well-grown son of Te Mania 11 465 – and bought another two bulls at $8000 and $5000.
Treetop Estate, Meningie, also bought a Sydgen Black Pearl 2006 son with balanced figures highlighted by a low birth figure of +3. The bull’s dam Coolana Nightingale D136 had six sons in the sale, averaging $7312.
Treetop Estate finished with six bulls averaging $7200, including lot 7, also by Sydgen Black Pearl 2006, with a low birth figure of +2.8 for $11,000.
Regular buyers Mooramook, Caramut, Vic, took another son of Sydgen Black Pearl 2006, also with a low birth figure of +1.9, for $11,000.
Both this bull and the top price bull were used by Coolana in the spring of 2016.
The 12 bulls sired by Sydgen Black Pearl 2006 averaged $8625, with five making $10,000 or more.
Everest Farm, Eden Hills, bid to $10,500 for two bulls, both sons of Sydgen Black Pearl 2006.
Last year’s top price bull buyers SJ&NJ McLeod, Macarthur, Vic, secured a son of Ardrossan Equator for $10,000. This bull had high growth figures and +7.8 for EMA.
Bidding was quieter for the Black Simmental bulls on offer, which were all autumn 2016-drops – 4-5 months younger than the Angus bulls.
Yera Estate, Leslie Manor, Vic, paid the top price of $6500 and took another at $4000, while KA Langley, buying through SKB Rodwell, Warrnambool, Vic, was the buyer of the second-highest price bull at $6000.
