BADERLOO Poll Merino stud’s inaugural on-property auction at Spalding was a huge success, with a top price of $3400 and $2650 average for the five rams sold.
Stud principals Daniel, Demelza and Ann Hammat were rapt with the attention created by the helmsman auction of their six top sale rams as an addition to their on-property inspection day on Sunday August 7.
“The auction attracted a lot of interest, not only from our regular clients, but also from potential new buyers and people just coming for a look,” Mr Hammat said.
The $3400 top price was paid by Andrew and Tim Polkinghorne of Kingara Farms, who run 1000 breeding ewes at Lock.
The 17.5 micron ram had excellent Australian Sheep Breeding Values, including a clean fleece weight of 22.2, yearling weight of 8.7, weaning weight of 6, post weaning weight of 6.2 and yearling staple length of 15.6.
Its wool tests included a very low standard deviation of 2.8 and 100 per cent comfort factor.
Andrew said the ram met all of their breeding objectives.
“We are particularly interested in good early growth rate and good wool cut,” he said.
Murray Town producer Geoff Zanker paid the $3100 second top price for a good white-woolled ram with a 16.1 micron fleece.
New client, Michael Flack, Mallala, bought two rams at $2500 and $2250.
After buying Baderloo bloodline ewes in a dispersal sale he was keen to continue with that genetic path.
Mr Hammat said the auction and open inspection was a great start to Baderloo’s selling season.
The stud sells around 200 rams through private sales each year to a strong following of clients, many of them Mid North producers.
