Supreme champion: Bauer, Ariah Park, NSW.
Champion Border Leicester ram: Bauer
Champion Border Leicester ewe: Retallack, Ariah Park, NSW
A RAM described as “only a lamb” has taken out the Supreme champion Border Leicester ribbon, at this year’s Australian Sheep & Wool Show.
Bauer, Ariah Park, NSW, won the ribbon, with stud principal Jamie Buerckner’s 12-month-old ram.
Mr Buerckner said the ram, which was still only a lamb, would probably now be set for this year’s Royal Melbourne Show.
Judge Harold Manton said he was impressed by the entries.
“I was particularly impressed with the young ram. He is a very correct sheep and worth the award,” Mr Manton said. He said the line-up was a good sign for the future of Border Leicesters.
“The wool job is bouyant, and picking up all the time; it’s all good for the Border job and the first cross ewe job,” he said. “That’s what the Borders are all about, to produce that magnificent mother, in the Border-Merino first cross ewe.”
The champion ewe, a twin, 832.16 by Retallack Left Handed was bred and exhibited by Graham and Isabella Grinter, Retallack stud, Ariah Park, and was of pure Retallack blood.
The ewe also won junior champion, repeating its success at this year’s Sydney Royal, and was similarly placed at Royal Canberra Show 2017.
