THE South East weaner selling season kicked off exceptionally well on Friday, with steers making to a massive $4.84 a kilogram at Ian and Louise Johnson’s circuit sale at Willalooka.
Spence Dix & Co conducted rolling sales at the Johnson’s Amherst, Wittalocka and Moville properties, with Jonathan Spence auctioneering a yarding of 2153.
The top price a kilogram was paid for 60 European Union-accredited Angus Wittalocka steers, which had Wittalocka, Coolana and Stoney Point-blood.
The steers weighed 282 kilograms and made $1365.
The top price a head was for 159 Mt Fyans-bred steers that made $1700 at Wittalocka and sold to Princess Royal.
The July to September 2015-drop steers weighed 440kg, equating to $3.86/kg.
Guest vendors Bergan Park, Keith, kicked off the sale at Amherst with a pen of 24 Lancaster and Stoney Point-bld steers.
The February/March 2016-drop steers weighed 354kg and sold for $1420 or $4.01/kg to Elders Millicent.
Fellow guest vendor Wayne Jackson, Yardookra, Willalooka, made the highest price a head at Amherst, with 40 steers, Coolana-bld, that made $1430 and sold to John Chay Livestock Millicent.
The steers weighed an average of 356kg, equating to $4.01/kg.
The top price steers a head from the Johnsons at Amherst were 63 Coolana, Stoney Point and Lancaster-blds, 339kg, that made $1390 or $4.10/kg.
The Johnsons received the highest price a kilogram at Amherst for 32 steers, 240kg, that made $1120 or $4.66/kg, selling to Elders Roseworthy.
Making the highest price a kilogram for heifers at Wittalocka were guest vendors RMK Pastoral, Willalooka, with 27 Stoney Point and Coolana-blds at $1140 or $4.45/kg.
The same vendor also sold a further 25 heifers at 284kg for $1250 or $4.40/kg, along with 22 steers, 292kg, for $1260 or $4.31/kg and 60 steers, 329kg, at $1355 or $4.11/kg.
At Moville, the highest price a head was $1470 for 22 steers from Braylyn Nominees, Wasleys.
The November/December 2015-drop steers weighed 411kg and sold to Princess Royal.
The highest price a kilogram was for 24 Moville steers at $4.82/kg.
The 230kg steers made $1110, selling to Elders Keith.
The highest price a kilogram for heifers at Moville was for 20 from Wayne Jackson, which made $4.29/kg, or $1040.
Mr Johnson was extremely happy with how the sale went.
“It really exceeded expectations, I’d say it was a phenomenal sale,” he said.
“It’s our strongest ever sale, and we’ve been holding it for more than 10 years.”
