A parcel of prime cropping land is believed to have set a new Yorke Peninsula auction record, selling for $16,403 a hectare last week.
Landmark Harcourts SA sales specialist and auctioneer Simon McIntyre said the 392.6ha at Curramulka sold by the Germein family exceeded expectations and highlighted the ability of an auction to extract maximum dollars in a tightly-held, reliable area. A large crowd packed into the Curramulka Community Club, including 10 registered bidders.
Bidding opened at $5 million and rose quickly in $20,000 bids to $6.44m. It was bought by a local farming family.
“We always believed it was top-quality country,” Mr McIntyre said.
“We didn’t go into it to make district records, but the auction determined where the market level is.
“It is generally elevated and coupled with the right rainfall, it is good country you can grow anything on. The land was the drawcard, but it also had a lovely four-bedroom home on it which had views across the gulf.”
