THE Glenhaven stud at Murray Bridge marked its 70th year of showing at the Royal Adelaide Show with a big win for senior champion Illawarra cow.
Six-year-old Glenhaven Little Princess 10th was praised by judge Robert Radel, Biggenden, Qld, as “full of style”.
“At that age you could forgive some wear and tear on the udder or feet and legs, but there isn’t any,” he said.
“This is the cow I’d most like to take home with me.”
Glenhaven principal Neville Mueller said to get the top prize was “always special”, but the moment was made even more special as they only had a handful of cows at Adelaide this year.
He said the cow was from a strong show family, with its dam Glenhaven Little Princess 9th ranked second in its class of cows in milk older than six years.
“The mother is a prolific show cow,” he said.
Mr Mueller said Little Princess 10th was improving all the time.
“The older the cow gets, the better it’s becoming, which is nice to have,” he said.
Reserve senior cow went to Springvale Empress 5 exhibited by Warren and Cheryl Doecke, Woods Point, while an honourable mention went to Lynonga Butter Lilly, from I&J Mueller, Glenbrook, Murray Bridge.
Ian and Julie Mueller won the intermediate section with “outstanding” three-year-old cow Glenbrook Nancy 53.
Mr Radel said the cow was well-developed with a “magnificent” udder.
“This is a fantastic example of what a dairy cow should look like,” he said.
Nancy also won the reserve intermediate section at the 2015 show.
Reserve intermediate this year went to Braelee Honeycombe 15th, exhibited by DJ&MA Kuhl, Mount Gambier, while the Doecke’s Springvale Pride 29 earned an honourable mention.
Glenbrook Milly, from I&J Mueller, won juvenile champion, after Mr Radel praised the yearling’s “balance”.
Reserve juvenile went to Glenbrook Poppy 6, from the same exhibitor, while Doeckes’ nine-month-old Springvale Choice got the honourable mention.
Springvale also claimed the best udder class, while IL&JA Mueller won most successful Illawarra exhibitor.
