JERSEY breeders in the Barossa Valley are preparing to showcase the best of their breed when the annual Jersey Australia conference comes to town next week.
The annual conference rotates throughout state bodies and cattle clubs and this year will be hosted by SA.
From May 18-20, delegates will attend from NSW, Tas, Vic and throughout SA. SA branch secretary Amy McDonald said the conference was a chance to show what was being done in the area.
The conference theme is ‘Value of Jerseys’, with each of the four local Jersey breeders value-adding to their milk production in some form, with milk-fed veal and pork and local brand Jersey Fresh.
“These are different takes on how we can use our breed to make something bigger,” she said.
The three-day conference will include tours of the local producers, and Roseworthy College, with a chance for some more traditional Barossa sightseeing.
The conference will also include the society’s annual general meeting and a formal dinner with award presentations. This year also coincides with the centenary of the formation of SA’s first Jersey society, and the dinner will celebrate that.
Ms McDonald said there was a national body but the state needed more than 20 registered Jersey breeders before it could form its own society 100 years ago.
