THE BlazeAid fencing effort on the Pinery fireground has wrapped up, with the Roseworthy camp closing last Friday, two weeks after the closure of the Hamley Bridge camp.
Roseworthy site coordinator Wendy Cope said the two camps achieved a lot in the five months since the fire, signing up 707 volunteers, ranging from 13 to 84-years-old, to work on 202 properties. They cleared away 590 kilometres of damaged fencing, with 364km of new fences erected – equivalent to the distance from Adelaide to Mildura, Vic.
Ms Cope said the support from the wider community was also impressive, with the University of Adelaide donating its space, while local communities and corporations got on board, including the loan of three tractors from local machinery distributors to speed up the fencing effort.
At the start of the fire, BlazeAid had 11 trailers in SA, with donations contributing to creating another nine, which will be stored in the Adelaide Hills, Port Adelaide and Lower North.
