SOME people seem to excel in any sport they play, and Donald Hannaford exemplifies that.
He forged a career with the Port Adelaide Magpies in 1959 and has spent the past 38 years at his pride and joy, the Riverton Golf Club.
"I took up golf when I finished football and been on the golf committee for 37 years," he said.
"In that time, I was president for four years and captain for five years."
Don has been club champion 15 times and thrown himself fully into a myriad of its activities, from upkeep of the course and mowing fairways to building the clubhouse.
"It is lovely little course, immaculately kept right on the edge of the town so everyone can walk to it," he said.
The 71-year-old now sits on a handicap of nine after moving up from a handicap of six last year.
His wife Bev joked that he was so competitive that younger club members struggled to keep up with him.
Don has also been involved in the champion of champions, where he was runner-up twice in previous years. He has also been representing the Mid North executive committee for 11 years.
Don is well known for his contributions to the Port Adelaide Magpies after which he headed back to Riverton and coached the local football side there - he took them to seven grand finals of which they won four.
