AN Adelaide Hills competition marks its half century this year.
The Mount Torrens and Districts Heifer competition, formerly known as the Birdwood Dairy Heifer Competition, started in 1966 and will celebrate its 50th event on April 1.
Competition coordinator Rodney Herrmann said key aspects to the day - learning and improved breeding - remained from the early days.
"I'd say we've progressed and learnt a lot," he said.
"We try and recognise the traits early in cattle and we've all learnt something."
The competition was originally inspired by the Birdwood and Mount Pleasant Agricultural Bureau's hogget competition. Mount Pleasant's Angus Haeusler had proposed a similar notion for dairy heifers, and was on the original committee, along with the first chairman Mick Polh.
The first judge was Mark Eckermann, Pella Stud, Eudunda, who went on to judge three more times, including at the 10-year milestone.
Mr Herrmann said Mr Eckermann was a big influence in developing the competition.
Another influential judge was Cyril Cockshell, Hemaford Fresian Stud, Gawler, who presided six times, between 1969 and the 20-year anniversary in 1985.
In keeping with the education theme, early shows included guest speakers on topics such as mating heifers, herd sire selection, calf rearing, disease management, and the relationship between type and production.
The event incorporates four competitions - a group of three heifers, in-milk, best heifer from the group of three, and mature cow.
Mr Herrmann said activities were planned to mark the occasion, with memorabilia gathered.
He hoped many of the past judges and entrants would return for a reunion.
Reaching 50 years was a major milestone but those involved were now looking ahead.
"Over the years we have seen the competition wane at times but it is still going strong," Mr Herrmann said.
"There is a bit of enthusiasm in the industry lately. I'd love to see it continue on now and get the next generation involved."
Details: To view the competition, meet at Mount Torrens Oval at 9am, April 1.
