THE world of precision agriculture is constantly changing, making it difficult to keep abreast of the latest developments.
Held in Crystal Brook on Wednesday, March 21, the Society of Precision Agriculture Australia’s Precision Ag Expo will give producers a better understanding of how new technology could be incorporated into their operations.
SPAA executive officer Nicole Dimos said the event will appeal to “novice and experienced PA users”.
“We have a great line up of presentations including a number of local farmers ready to share their experiences.
“There will also be practical, onsite demonstrations which will give farmers access to the latest PA technologies, along with trade displays and networking opportunities to make PA adoption accessible to farmers regardless of the industries they are involved with.
“The PA EXPO hopes to provide an independent environment to support precision agriculture adoption for farmers across the Mid North and surrounding areas.”
The program features mechatronic research fellow Cheryl McCarthy, with the National Centre for Engineering in Agriculture at the University of Southern Qld.
Her research involves developing machine vision and sensing systems for agriculture and will discuss crop scouting for weeds.
A drawcard to the program will be prominent interstate farmers Jonathan Dyer from Wimmera, Vic, and Phil Longmire from Esperance, WA ,who will share their stories of PA application on their farms, which has been aided through their interest and research through Nuffield programs.
Both scholars studied precision agriculture, big data with the goal to understand and aid PA adoption.
There will also be a discussion on data management tips and new PA apps.
Local farmer Leigh Fuller will discuss whole paddock pH mapping and how that can be used to for variable rate lime application.
“We know that hearing about PA adoption from a farmer really resonates with our audience and we have plenty on our program” Ms Dimos said.
“So we’ve got a panel of farmers who will discuss their variable rate implementation strategies and other PA technology use on their farms”
In conjunction to the EXPO, SPAA will hold its AGM during lunch and encourages all attendees to join SPAA and attend this meeting.
