A new sale has burst onto the SA studstock calendar with the state’s Charolais breeders set to hold their inaugural multi-vendor sale, later this month.
On Friday March 23, seven vendors from across SA will offer a top quality line-up of Charolais and Charolais infused cattle at the Mount Pleasant saleyards.
The SA Charolais Sale will feature 21 stud bulls, eight registered females and 30 commercial females, both joined and unjoined heifers and some cows with calves.
SA Charolais Breeders chairman Josh Wiltshire has been pleased with the pre-sale interest and says it gives local studs an opportunity to showcase genetics within the state.
It follows the success of other Charolais regional sales held in WA and Vic.
“We have been flying the Charolais flag for many years at local and Royal shows but now with such high interest in the breed an opportunity for a state sale was a great way to further enhance our direction within the region,” he said.
Mr Wiltshire says there is a significant hybrid vigour advantage from using Charolais sires in British Breed herds with high yielding carcases and excellent growth rates.
These Charolais calves are being identified in the marketplace with silver ear tags under an initiative from the Charolais Society of Australia.
“With the introduction of the Charolais label ‘Charolais silver calves’ any commercial producer crossing into profit with Charolais sires can market their calves under this label,” he said.
“Commercial cattle producers are seeing premiums equal to steers for their heifer calves not being retained for breeding,” he said.
The participating studs in the SA Charolais Sale are Arabar, Balaklava; Blackstone, Meadows; Caithness, Mount Barker; Gumview, Crystal Brook; Moohaki, Mount Pleasant, Ryeview, Millicent and Schwaryn, Loxton.
All bulls will be weighed, ultrasound scanned and have their scrotal circumferences measured, with the results available on a supplementary sheet on sale day.
The sale commences at 12 noon with inspection from 9am.
Landmark Fawcett are conducting the sale.
