WHITEFACE commercial breeders at the Diamond Poll Hereford bull sale were in the right place at the right time on Wednesday last week, with some of the season’s best value buying.
In a disappointing 50 per cent clearance, 24 bulls found homes for a $5417 average at Bendulla, Mundulla.
This was down significantly on the 2017 result.
Host vendors Ross, Andrew and Tiffany Bennett sold 19 of 34 bulls for a $5474 average, including the $8000 sale topper.
The top priced bull came late in the sale, Bendulla Horizon M148, at Lot 41.
The eye appealing sire was bought byTim Widdison, Melecca Farms, Pleasant Park, for his Hereford and black baldy herd.
“His colour and the size of him were right- he is a good looking bull,” Mr Widdison said.
The July-2016-drop was packed with performance, being the second heaviest in the catalogue at 950 kilograms, despite being one of the youngest.
The good pigmented bull was a grandson of Melville Columbus and in the top 1 per cent of the breed for 600 day growth at +104.
Long-time supporters, P&S Byrnes, Cavan Station, via Wentworth, NSW, led the buyers list with four bulls at $4000 each.
Elders Port Augusta’s Lewis Bruggemann bought three bulls for DJ, JM&RJ Michael, Carriewerloo Station, via Port Augusta, including Lot 6 at the $7500 second highest price.
GHA&BR Kuhl, Kongorong, also bought three bulls for a $5500 average.
Guest vendors Rod, Gayle, Brad and Alana Davies, Wrattenbullie stud, Wrattonbully, sold five of their eight bulls for a $5200 average.
Two of these, both Elite 4110 H297 sons, made $7000.
Brett and Amanda Shepherd, Roeston Park stud, Kybybolite, were the third vendors offering five bulls.
Andrew Bennett said it was disappointing not to have a higher clearance, especially considering the even line-up of bulls they presented, but “you move on.”
“The plus was our repeat clients walked away with what they wanted at really good value,” he said.
“It is dry times around the place and buyers filled up at sales early in the week.”
Landmark auctioneer Richard Miller said the sale presented a “unique opportunity”for buyers to acquire industry bulls at very good value.
“The Bendulla cattle especially, are high performance cattle with plenty of red meat and bone that can produce calves that will suit all markets,” Mr Miller said.
“We just needed one or two more volume buyers to put a floor in the sale.”
Landmark and Elders conducted the sale with Mr Miller and Ross Milne the auctioneers.
