Goolagong secures new stud top price

The top price of $13,000 was paid by Tyson and Peter Sampson, Warramboo, for lot three, Angus bull Goolagong Genesis M40, which attracted plenty of attention from the gallery.

The stud sold 27 of 40 Angus bulls, averaging $5000, and also sold nine of 17 Santa Gertrudis bulls, at a $4444 average.

Stud principal Heath Tiller welcomed the new stud record and said he was happy with the sale results.

“I thought the sale may have been a bit tougher with the drier conditions in the north of the state,” he said.

The stud welcomed many return and new clients, with 25 bidders registering for the sale.

The top price Angus bull was part of Goolagong’s winning sires’ progeny team at the 2017 Royal Adelaide Show.

Tyson said he was was chasing similar genetics to a bull he already had at his Eyre Peninsula farm.

The 21-month-old was embryo transfer-bred and sired by Pathfinder Genesis G357 and out of Pathfinder ADA F291.

It weighed 840 kilograms, had a scrotal circumference of 42 centimetres, and an eye muscle area figure of +6.9.

Goolagong Genesis had a 200-day weight figure of +59, a 400-day weight of +102 and a 600-day weight of +146.

Mr Sampson, a first-time buyer at Goolagong, said he was looking for genetics by Pathfinder Genesis to go with his breeders.

“The bull we bought had good growth rates, which we liked,” he said.

There were four top price Santa Gertrudis bulls sold at $5000, including Goolagong Lennox L120, which was bought by repeat buyer Andrew Bassingthwaighte, Yarrawonga stud, Wallumbilla, Qld.

The 30-month-old bull weighed 968kg, had a scrotal circumference of 43cm, a EMA of 129sqcm and a rib fat of 9mm.

Mr Bassingthwaighte said he chose the bull because of its genetics and conformation.

“The genetics of the sire goes back to a bull that we have at home,” he said.

Goolagong Maurice M46 was the second $5000 Santa Gertrudis, and was bought by Ingomar Station, Port Augusta.

It weighed 720kg, had an EMA of 115sqcm, a rib fat of 7mm and a scrotal circumference of 37cm.

Goolagong M64 – also sold to Ingomar Station for $5000 – weighed 742kg and boasted an EMA of 116sqcm, rib fat of 5mm and a scrotal circumference of 39.5cm.

The fourth $5000 Santa Gertrudis bull – Goolagong Murray M114 – was bought by Cowarie Station, via Marree.

Volume buyers included Broad Cattle Co, Hallett, which bought five Angus bulls averaging $4000, while Moralana Station, Port Augusta, took home three Angus averaging $4666.

From Mintaro, Hale River Agriculture bought three averaging $4000.

Ingomar Station was the volume Santa Gertrudis buyer, successfully bidding on four bulls for an average of $4500, while Karoongi Pastoral, Port Vincent, took two averaging $4000.

Landmark and Elders conducted the sale with Landmark’s Richard Miller and Gordon Wood taking bids.
